The FAA issued the Part 107 ruling in June, which establishes rules for the commercial use of drones. These rules took effect on August 29, 2016. Under Part 107, drone pilots are no longer required to have a pilot's license for commercial drone operations.
Instead, the FAA now requires a "Remote Pilot Certificate" as part of the new rule. To obtain this certificate, pilots must pass an aeronautical knowledge test at one of the FAA's 700 testing sites across the United States. The term "drone operator" has also been replaced with "drone pilot." The key distinction is whether one is a Part 61 (manned) or Part 107 (unmanned) pilot. Part 61 pilots are also required to take the Part 107 exam but have the option to do it online.
The Part 107 exam is described as a 60-item multiple-choice exam. Each question is independent and will not be influenced by others. Some questions may require the use of visual aids, such as airspace maps or charts.
The exam is divided into various categories, with the FAA assigning different weights to each category. The emphasis is placed on safety and regulations.
- Regulations: 15 - 25%
- Airspace & Requirements: 8 - 15%
- Weather: 11 - 16%
- Loading & Performance: 7 - 17%
- Operations: 13 - 18%
The Part 107 application includes several features:
- 350+ practice questions with detailed explanations
- Practice tests based on real tests, simulating the format and time limits of the actual exam
- Gamification to make studying more engaging
- A personalized study plan based on the test date
- Three different test modes with varying difficulty levels
- A dark mode option for a more comfortable viewing experience
- A test bank with questions categorized as weak, medium, or strong to help identify areas of focus
